Second Trimester: The Golden Period (Weeks 13-27)
Often called the most comfortable trimester, learn what changes to expect and how to make the most of this special time.
The second trimester is often called the "golden period" of pregnancy. Morning sickness typically fades, your energy returns, and you start to feel your baby move.
Weeks 13-16: Energy Returns
Many women experience a welcome boost in energy. Your baby bump starts to show, and you may begin to feel more like yourself again.
What's happening: Your baby can now suck their thumb and make facial expressions. The body is growing rapidly.
Weeks 17-20: First Kicks
This is when most women feel their baby move for the first time (called "quickening"). It might feel like bubbles, butterflies, or gentle tapping.
Milestones:
- The anatomy scan (usually around week 20) reveals detailed information about your baby's development
- You may find out your baby's sex if you wish
- Your belly is clearly visible now
Weeks 21-27: Growing Stronger
Your baby is gaining weight and becoming more active. You might notice patterns in their movement.
Physical changes:
- Back pain as your belly grows
- Skin changes (stretch marks, linea nigra)
- Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions)
- Round ligament pain
- Swelling in feet and ankles
Self-Care Tips
- Exercise regularly: Prenatal yoga, swimming, and walking are excellent choices
- Sleep on your side: Left side is ideal for blood flow
- Moisturize: Keep skin hydrated to help with stretching
- Stay connected: Take a babymoon or plan special time with your partner
- Start planning: Begin thinking about the nursery and baby essentials
The second trimester is a wonderful time to bond with your growing baby and prepare for the exciting months ahead.
