The final stretch! Learn about what to expect in the third trimester and how to prepare for delivery.
You're in the home stretch! The third trimester brings excitement, anticipation, and some new physical challenges as your body prepares for birth.
Weeks 28-32: Getting Ready
Your baby is practicing breathing, and their brain is developing rapidly. You'll notice more defined sleep and wake cycles.
What you might experience:
- Shortness of breath as baby pushes against your diaphragm
- Heartburn and indigestion
- Difficulty sleeping
- More frequent Braxton Hicks contractions
Weeks 33-36: Final Preparations
Your baby is gaining about half a pound per week. They may "drop" (engage in the pelvis), making breathing easier but increasing pressure on your bladder.
Important tasks:
- Pack your hospital bag
- Install the car seat
- Finalize your birth plan
- Pre-register at the hospital
Weeks 37-40: Full Term
Your baby is considered full term at 39 weeks. They could arrive any day!
Signs of labor:
- Regular contractions that get closer together
- Water breaking
- Bloody show (mucus plug)
- Lower back pain that doesn't go away
Hospital Bag Essentials
- Insurance cards and ID
- Comfortable clothing and robe
- Toiletries
- Phone charger
- Going-home outfit for baby
- Snacks for labor
Mental Preparation
- Take a childbirth class if you haven't already
- Practice relaxation techniques: Breathing exercises, visualization
- Talk to your partner: Discuss your birth preferences and fears
- Be flexible: Birth plans are guides, not guarantees
